The right set to estimate your deadlift
On the deadlift, use a short set of 2 to 5 reps: on longer sets grip and back tire before the legs and the estimate gets pessimistic. Reset the bar on every rep instead of bouncing it.
Estimation formulas are a little less accurate on the deadlift than on the bench, because bar speed varies a lot between lifters. Keep a few percent in hand before attempting a PR.
Your deadlift against competitors
The standards tables on this page come from raw meet results recorded by OpenPowerlifting, by weight class and level.
It's usually the heaviest of the three lifts: 0 to 25 % above the squat for most powerlifters. A very different gap is a good hint of a weak point.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my max deadlift?
A set of 2 to 5 heavy reps, resetting the bar each rep, then the formula. The calculator gives your estimated 1RM and the load for every percentage.
What is a good deadlift?
For a trained man, 2 times bodyweight is a good level, 2.5 times a very good one. In raw competition, the median deadlift is 215 kg (474 lb) for men in the 83 kg class, about 2.6 times bodyweight.
Is my deadlift too weak compared with my squat?
If it's lighter than your squat, probably. Our ratio tool compares your three lifts and shows the expected weight.
Sumo or conventional: do estimates change?
The formulas work for both styles. Estimate each style from its own set if you train both.
