The step after a beginner program
Madcow 5x5 is an intermediate weekly-progression program inspired by Bill Starr. Three sessions: heavy Monday (5 ramping sets of 5), light Wednesday, PR Friday (a triple above Monday's top set, then a back-off set of 8).
The first weeks start below your PRs to build momentum: week 4 matches your current 5RMs, then each week adds about 2.5 %.
When to use it
When session-to-session progress on a beginner program stalls. Madcow usually runs 8-12 weeks before finer periodisation is needed.
A coach can then take over with blocks targeting the athlete's weak points, which CoachForce lets you build and track in detail.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 12.5 % ramp?
Each set of 5 is 12.5 % lighter than the next: the last is the heavy set, the previous ones are preparation.
Why is week 1 lighter than my PR?
To build volume before passing your PRs: your current 5RMs come in week 4, then get beaten.
How long does Madcow last?
Usually 8-12 weeks, as long as Friday PRs keep falling.
Is Madcow good for powerlifting?
As a general strength base, yes. To prepare for a meet you then need a specific block with heavy singles.
When should I move from StrongLifts to Madcow?
When session-to-session progress stops despite resets. Madcow moves to weekly progression, better suited to intermediates.
Is Madcow good for building muscle?
Yes, its 5 × 5 volume and three sessions a week suit muscle gain, with a slight calorie surplus.
How long should I run Madcow 5x5?
Usually eight to twelve weeks, until weekly PRs get hard.
