Intermediate programs

Strength programs for intermediates

When weight no longer goes up every session, these programs move progression to the week or the cycle, and specialisation cycles push a single lift.

Also known as: intermediate powerlifting program · strength plateau program · advanced strength program

Weekly progression

The Texas Method and Madcow 5x5 split the week into volume, recovery and intensity, with a PR targeted each week. 5/3/1 progresses in four-week cycles with a slowly rising training max: slower, but very durable.

Specialisation cycles

Smolov Jr (three weeks) and Smolov (thirteen weeks in full) pack huge volume onto one lift. They work very well now and then, as long as you cut back elsewhere and recover well.

Frequently asked questions

Why have I stopped getting stronger?

Usually because your beginner program isn't enough anymore: you need more volume and weekly progression. Sleep, food and technique matter a lot too.

5/3/1 or Texas Method?

The Texas Method progresses faster but burns out within months; 5/3/1 is slow and can run for years. Many lifters run one after the other.

Do intermediates need a coach?

Not required, but it's the stage where a coach makes the most difference: individual programming, fatigue and weak-point management, meet preparation.
